(about this author)

  • (MSRP: 11.9900)

One night of passion in high school between Merry Donovan and Joe Moro--the boy she had loved from afar--was all it took to create a new life. Afterward, Merry gave their infant son up for adoption. Joe never learned he had been a father.

Ten years later, an ex-lover dumps a two-day-old baby on Joe's lap and disappears. He hires Merry, a professional nanny, to care for the infant….never recognizing her as "Mousy Merry" from high school. Joe is determined to keep the baby despite the fact he has no proof he is the father.

Merry can't understand why a single man would want to keep a newborn…until she learns the heart-wrenching secret behind his affection for the child.

But Merry has a secret of her own--and it threatens to destroy the first Christmas Joe has ever celebrated.

It dawned on Merry. "Ahhhh," she said, on a note of discovery. "You're trying to make a warm, fuzzy, old-fashioned family Christmas, aren't you?"

Joe turned to her almost angrily, as if she had caught him with his trousers down. "Well, what if I am? Damn it, Merry, I'm trying. I just don't know how to go about doing it."

    "Doing what?"

"Making a Christmas. Making one that's warm and fuzzy and old-fashioned and family-oriented."

This was clearly a difficult admission for him. "Joe, look. It's not that I object to you buying the store out, if that's what you want. But all the beautiful decorations in the world won't make up for a lack of warmth and, oh hell, I don't know. Maybe it's too intangible to describe. You're trying to make your house a home. The problem is, you just don't quite know how to go about doing it."

    "So teach me."

    She blinked. "Excuse me?"

"So teach me. You've been harping about that for some time now. What exactly is this secret ingredient that makes a house a home?"

Love. The word very nearly sprang to her lips, but fortunately remained unsaid. Yet something on her face must have touched Joe, for his expression altered from one of baffled frustration to dawning comprehension.
