  • Savage Times 1

Ana Salvatore, a marine biologist, wants nothing more than to have an independent life free of her mobster family. While on an excursion in the Bermuda Triangle with her uncle, his boat explodes, and she wakes to find herself in the arms of gorgeous Captain Jacen Stirling on an ancient ship. It's like a fairytale, until he tells her the year is 1814.

Jacen is on a secret mission for General Andrew Jackson to infiltrate the infamous privateer Jean Lafitte’s encampment to determine his loyalties. When he discovers Ana while on his way to meet Lafitte, he can’t decide if she’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to him, or the best.

As the Battle of New Orleans draws nearer, can Jacen and Ana work together to help their country beat the invaders? Or will the British, the war, or the savage winds of time keep them apart?

When Ana lifted her lids, she found herself once again on the lumpy mattress. She turned her head and discovered the captain at the foot of the cot with her life vest in his hands. His eyes had done that strange color shift again and his sandy blond hair, pulled back to stream down his back, glowed almost gold.

“Where did you have this made?” he asked without looking at her.

Her mind swirled with the impossible conclusion she had come up with. She couldn’t bring herself to believe it but decided to test her theory. “I didn’t have it made. My uncle bought it.”

His regard angled her way. “Where?”

She sat up and shrugged. “Probably online.”

“Online?” He turned to her with the jacket still in his hand. “I don’t know this place. Where might I find online?”

Ana laughed, but it came out uneasy. “Anywhere you’re connected to the Internet.”

The man froze. “Internet?” He said the word slowly, emphasizing each syllable, as if he was trying to figure out the meaning of the word.

“Yeah, you know that place you go to when you use your computer, phone, or whatever device to access things online.” She watched him closely for any hint he was fooling her by trying to pretend he didn’t know what she was talking about. There wasn’t even a whiff on his sculptured features to state he understood.

The man shook his head. “Is Internet found in Alta California?”

“Yes, and anywhere else around the world, as long as you have a connection.”

“Around the world? Are you saying you’ve traveled around the entire globe?”

This time she really did laugh. “No. But I can see everywhere around the world, and into space, too, using the Internet.”

He stared at her, and if she had to guess, he had stopped breathing. After sometime he squared his shoulders. “I’m afraid you must still be ill.”

    Yeah, I’m afraid you’re right.

“Believe me, I wish that was true. Because if it’s what I’m starting to suspect it is, it’s worse. Much worse.”

    “What is worse?” he asked.

    “My situation.”

    “What situation is that?”

“Have you ever heard of the Bermuda Triangle? Or the Devil’s Triangle?”

    He shook his head.

“It’s a large area covering from Miami—” When confusion creased his brow, she corrected herself. “An area on the east coast of Florida. From there, it goes to Bermuda, and then down to Puerto Rico. I’m not sure what you call Puerto Rico. Anyhow, there have been reports of entire boats and planes—transportation machines—disappearing or reappearing into thin air in that area.”

“Ah, there have been stories regarding this, but they are nothing but tall tales.” He gave her a quizzical look, and she squirmed. Please don’t think I’m crazy and lock me in the brig.
