    A siren’s call. And I’m so there.

“Would you like to see my grandmother’s room?” Meg flicked her dark blue gaze over his bare chest.

The intelligence analyst in him was tempted to take her up on her offer, but he sensed she was testing him. Was he there as an agent or a man?

He shook his head. Their past—all two weeks’ worth, followed by two months of silence—was no longer his concern. If he wanted a future with this woman, he needed to show her he wanted to move forward with her. When she sat on a settee in front of the bedroom window, he joined her. They sat for a moment, silently sipping their coffee. He’d made his black, hers with a hearty dose of hazelnut-flavored creamer, just as she’d requested.

“I’ll be down to San Diego every weekend…or as many weekends as I can manage.” He gazed at her face, devoid of makeup. Her sleepy-eyed expression was sexy as hell. “If you’re free…”

“Down? You mean, you’ll be up in Northern California? On an undercover assignment?”

“Yeah, somewhere in Nor Cal. All I can say is, I’ll be down to see you every weekend, if I can get away. I’ll fly down and rent a car. The very Devil couldn’t keep me away.”

Her smile dissolved into a frown. “Will there be women involved in this undercover assignment?” When he stared, she went on. “You said yourself you were sent to investigate my grandmother because the Bureau thought you had a knack for…how did you put it, drawing out women. Was that a euphemism for seducing them?”

He looked down at the mug in his hands, grabbed at random from a kitchen shelf. It was hand painted and signed by the child Meg once was. She was no longer a child. She was a damn, smart woman.

No more lies. Not if he could help it.

“More often, the promise of seduction than the real thing. With you…well, that was unplanned and unauthorized. Not supposed to happen. If things hadn’t turned out…” He saw a flicker of pain cross her face. “…the way they did, I might’ve been fired. My job—my career with the FBI is important to me. What happened to you and me, Meg, wasn’t part of the plan.”

She touched his forearm. “I know. I don’t resent you for it, what happened. What you did for us, Gran and me—well, I’ve accepted the way it all turned out. Only Uncle John and I know the truth. What Gran did during the war.”

“Your mother? Do you think she knows?”

Meg’s lovely face clouded over. “If she does, she’s not saying. I think a long time ago, she swore to keep Grandma’s secret. That might’ve been what caused Mom’s rebellion.”

Eager to change the subject, he leaned over and nuzzled her temple. He detected lavender in her hair. “So Meg, are weekends good enough for you? I swear, you’ll have my total attention two days a week.”
