    “Don’t You Dare Die!”

I screamed as the heavy revolver exploded in my hand and fell to the ground. The bear moving toward Scout dropped, and I raced to scoop up my son before he toppled into the cold black stream. Looking startled, he managed a weak cry before I smothered him into my chest and both our cries were muffled in his thick scarf. The dog shoved something wet against my leg and began to bark, running from me to the Beaverwoods, now cautiously circling the bear. The boys were armed with pieces of thick deadwood and Chuck picked up my smoking gun, cocked the trigger and ordered his sons to stand back. He aimed the gun at the animal to finish him off, then suddenly dropped his arm and knelt beside the still lump of fur. Tommy grasped the growling dog by its collar, and in the sudden silence, I could hear a collective gasp. Someone uttered “Jeesus” like an invocation.

Still cradling my son, exhausted by fear, I ventured closer and could see at once that it was no bear I shot. A man in a bearskin poncho lay on his side. Chuck rolled him over and pulled off the man’s hood. A mass of dark matted hair covered the part of his face that wasn’t blooming with blood, pooling into his left ear, running down his cheek and into his thick beard.

“Is he, is he dead?” I whispered.

Chuck took off his glove and wiped the man’s neck with it, then fumbled for a pulse. We all started when the man groaned and his eyes fluttered open.

Green! His eyes were green, the rarest of all eye color. The fear in them more than the color registered with me as he searched our faces. When his eyes collided with mine, his jaw twitched and his beard moved. A flash of memories washed over me, and my heart began to thump wildly in my chest. I set Scout down when my knees began to buckle, and I thought I was going to be sick. My legs were crumpling beneath me as I threw out my arms to catch myself from falling onto the body. One of my hands slid into blood dripping in the snow and the touch prickled my bare fingers.

So red against the white snow. His eyes, so…green. Every shade in a spectrum of emotion raced through my memory; joy, frustration, anger…love. I knew only one man who owned eyes like those. He had come back to me.

Fear jolted into purposeful clarity. I took a deep breath and unwrapped Scout’s scarf to sop up the blood on Mitch’s neck. He groaned again and closed his eyes. “Mitch, look at me. It’s Jessica. I didn’t mean to shoot…look at me.” I sobbed, unable to complete the order to myself, maybe to him. Don’t you dare die!

The Accidental Stranger

Maria Schmidt rated it was amazing
Fosdick has the ability to create characters that by the end of her books feel like dear friends. This is an experience that I have rarely had the privilege of feeling, because it takes great skill for an author to generate such relatable and adored individuals. The journey these wonderful characters take is one that the reader cannot predict--and the turns of events keeps the reader engaged as they quickly turn the pages. I became invested in each of their trials and triumphs. I would highly recommend this novel if you are looking for an entertaining and unique story that will keep you guessing as it places you in the midst of different scenarios in perfectly detailed surroundings. Get ready to meet the accidental stranger! I think you'll like him.
