    Excerpt:

“Oh God, that feels good,” he moaned.

He was doing the moaning thing on purpose, but Alexis couldn’t stop a grin from pushing to her face.

“What do you like to eat? Please don’t say sushi.” Gray pretended to gag.

    “Why not sushi?”

“The different textures make me want to hurl.”

“Drama queen,” she mocked. When he half-closed his eyes, she reminded him he didn’t mind being sassed.

“Sass in small doses,” he quipped. “Anyway, you didn’t answer the question.”

This part of Gray Patterson she liked. When he wasn’t trying to show off body parts, he was fun to talk to. “Chinese food and brownies. Not at the same time though.”

“I know some excellent places in Chinatown, if you’re game.”

Alexis walked around the table to work on his other side. “If I’m game?” She laughed. “When you leave this weekend you’ll most likely be married. I don’t think your brand new wife would be too keen on you and me going out for Chinese food.” For reasons she couldn’t comprehend, the thought of him leaving there as a married man bothered her.

He snorted his reply. “It’s doubtful I’ll leave married. The two introductions Jeb and Tish hooked me up with were way off the mark. I’d rather marry a billy goat than either one of them.”

An odd happiness flowed through her. “Don’t mention that to Jeb because I’m sure he could locate one for you.”

Gray rolled to his side with a serious look. “I have a proposition for you, Alexis Kelly.”

Review

Joanne's review was first posted at Romancing the Book.

After having read One Small Fib by Romes I was looking forward to reading another of her books. The Gift of Gray did not disappoint. It drew several emotions out of me – laughter and tears – but was ultimately a feel good story with a happily ever after.

I love that it was set at Christmas and that Alexis and Gray clicked immediately even if it seemed like they got off on the wrong foot. Their chemistry was so hot I thought they would self destruct at times or have their sheets, bed, etc. combust from the heat they threw off.

I liked that Alexis had such good friends looking out for her and that Gray could give her the family she’s always wanted. There was friendship, romance, love, hurt, anger, frustrations, misunderstandings and a quirky premise but the storyline worked and drew me in and kept my interest from the first page to the last.

My only disappointment was it was only 99 pages. It ended too quickly and I would love to know how their lives continued once they went back to New York City. I look forward to reading other books by this author and will be adding her to my TBR pile. Give her books a try. You’ll be glad you did!

Favorite Quote: …The truth that Gray fooled around with her because he hadn’t found anyone else interesting enough to occupy his time was a hard blow to dodge. Another selfish reality made her feel even worse-Tish and Jeb were kind enough to give her a job. They trusted her. And she’d broken that trust by messing with one of their clients. Alexis leaned against the shower door and pulled the plug on her emotions.

    My Review:

This is an interesting premise for a book. Alexis is filling in part-time at her friends Adirondack retreat. This all-inclusive bed and breakfast caters to the rich and busy. Their specialty is to hook up couples (within a weekend) who want to become married, but are too busy to find their perfect mate. Bizarre, right? But this $5000/weekend inn has an 80% success (i.e. marriage) rate....like I said, interesting premise.

Alex is there filling in for the masseuse, even though she's not really a masseuse. She needs the money. Unfortunately, she fell for the wrong guy and he left her with the mortgage on the condo they bought together...something that her secretarial salary doesn't quite cover.

Her first customer is Gray, one of the guests at the inn. He's belligerent, rude, and doesn't think twice about complaining....about everything. Of course, he realizes right away that Alexis is not a real masseuse, but he finds her much more intriguing than any of the guests at the inn.

Okay, yes, there are absolutely several implausible details to this story line, but regardless of that I found this book to be fun and charming. It's a short little read that takes place during Christmastime when the snow is falling. It appealed to my romantic heart. There are enough minor twists and turns in the story to keep it interesting. I liked Alex and her stubborn pride. I liked how gruff Gray could be. He comes across as this harsh, demanding guy, but he's actually lonely. He wants a wife and family in his life. You gotta love that kind of vulnerability in a purely alpha male.

Jeb & Tish are the owners of the inn and they've been friends with Alex their entire lives. I loved the elements they added to the story. They provide Alex with a safe place and they absolutely put her and her friendship above the business needs of their inn....and you have to respect that...even if it isn't good business sense.

This was definitely a fun book. I'd read this author again!
