Dawn's intense hatred for math began in sixth grade, when she used to write short stories during math class and pass them around the room for other students to read. This is probably why she still cannot balance a checkbook or figure a 15 percent tip. However, she was able to earn a degree in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she studied creative writing under authors Doris Betts and Bland Simpson. In 1986, she appeared on "CBS Morning News" to discuss resources for young authors. Her first novel, "Saint Jude" (Tudor Publishers, 2001), chronicled the life of a young girl with bipolar disorder, and it received positive reviews from "Booklist" magazine and the "School Library Journal." She was a second-place winner in the NC Poetry Society's annual contest, and the world premiere of her play, "Jesu of Fondue," was presented at the Nash County Arts Center in April 2006. Currently, Dawn lives near Rocky Mount, NC, where she is a public relations writer. She is pursuing her master's degree in creative writing and English at East Carolina University.
